The narrator for the audiobook is absolutely excellent.

There are a lot of interesting and engaging aspects to this book, and overall I enjoyed the read despite the more nonsensical plot points. I listened to the audiobook, which I think heightened the experience.

There were a few points that I wanted to DNF, but the plot held me hostage.

Giving this 3 stars because the writing and the plot were good. However, I was not a fan of the way in which a lot of the characters were described.

Biggest issue with this book: the way in which the fat character’s body was discussed and described and that part of the happy ending is that he got thin. The book never lets you forget that his personality is so great that he is loved despite his body. There are so many great and amazing things about him, but the main focus of his character is that he’s fat. Don’t get me wrong, I loved having a fat character front and center doing heroic acts. I would prefer that the character not be constantly verbally abused by the author. Him being thin in the happy ending just solidified the fact that the author didn’t think the character was enough being fat. I absolutely hated it. There was nothing about the fat shaming that was necessary to move the story forwards.

Second biggest issue with this book: the way that women are talked about. It’s very men writing women. At first it seemed like good storytelling because it showed the reader how disgusting a certain character’s mind is. But then there’s moments when the author just puts horrific imagery of female breasts that have been mutilated when there is none of that relating to men’s bodies.

Also, there is an instance of the use of the n-word that does nothing for the story except show the audience that this awful white man from the south in the 1920s is racist, which is already implied. That was also a big issue for me.

I really wanted to like this book, I really did.
It started well, idea was good and I enjoyed Joe Hill's other two books I've read.
But alas, I was disappointed.

Some of the characters felt really icky, I mean yes it's a horror book but..
And around when Vic met Lou I started to have doubts that I would not finish this.
Joe Hill was so focused on telling us how fat Lou was and how his dad was fat and it was just Jesus Fuck. I counted that on one page the word "fat" was mentioned like 5 times..
(I don't understand how it's added only as "minor" CW by the users here 😒🤔

Good idea, some good characters but poor writing couldn't save.
I got to 51%, final nail in the coffin was when Manx
killed the poor doggie 🤬😭

Just taking too long to really get started, the characters are not doing it for me, they're too real in a very "grimy" kinda way... Only characters I liked were Maggie and Lou, and poor Lou is fat, and we are told just how fat he is every damn time he's mentioned. To the point where the way he's described at times feels fatphobic, you know? And it's SO much. Jesus. Charlie Manx, also, very interesting villain. But again, it took way too long to get to the point. We get dribs and drabs here and there (I stopped at 43%, it may have picked up after this point but I'm so mentally checked out) and the narrative is so ... jagged. Lots of POV hopping, and changes in time period and such. It's messy. I just don't think this one is for me. Sadly. I was so excited, too.

Not my favorite. It was well written, but I felt like there were some unnecessary slurs and some of the characters weren't believable or the tropes were laid on a bit too thick. I really don't need a white writer to use the n word in modern fiction unless there is really no other word to progress the story. I was also disappointed with the narration of Kate Mulgrew as well (and I LOVE her) in the audiobook. Some of her character voices made certain characters even less believable and it was distracting. This is one of those few cases where the TV adaptation was better than the book.

DNF'd at 40%. I cannot do this. This book was so horrendous it was physically affecting me. I could not figure out why I was in a bad mood and its because I've been listening to this fuckin book. Its over 700 pages/20+ hours of audio time and I have had enough. It's not horror, its not sci-fi, its some kind of splatterpunk gore bullshit with characters so unlikable you hope they all croak and they are not worth the fact that 50% of the book is repetitive exposition. .....Also I found out like 5 minutes ago that this author is SK's son. Which explains so many of the references. OOF.
