*If you read Gideon the Ninth and ended the book with a lot of interest and hope for the plot being expanded later in the series, definitely read Harrow despite all that I’m about to say about it.*

This book is agonizingly slow until it’s slow and not agonizing and then it’s breakneck pace.

Looking back, I find myself frustrated that so many scenes were included (and descriptive) that could have been left out or had their frequency cut down significantly. I waded through what felt like a lot of mud out of pure hope and anticipation for the series.

This could have been a very high four for me. The ending saved the series for me but it did not save the book. It did save the rating I guess though. This was a 1.5 star level of enjoyment for me until the 60% mark where it was a 3.5, and then by the 80% mark it was a 4.5 star level of enjoyment.

harrow as a narrator >>>>>>>> Gideon as a narrator. So much more complex a book for the first that constantly keeps you guessing

This was fantastic.
I was confused a lot, but in the end it all made sense.

I so so wanted to love this book. As I loved Gideon so much. But the plot was all over the place. Slow then quick all at one. Which usually I enjoy as a writing style. But this book left too many characters as mysteries, too many discrepancies unsolved and did not really, in any way link to the first book. It was bizarre, and heartbreaking the way they dragged Harrow and the other characters through a strange world that Muir spent so much time building in the first book, only to destroy in this book.
Maybe I missed the point, as I understand many people loved this book. But I am left sad and annoyed.
