It was about time I visited this old friend of mine...
Katie MacAlister was a pinnacle favourite author of mine during my teen years. I spent hours upon hours in the hospital with my Dad for his cancer treatments, and Katie MacAlister's writing became a friend and supporter of mine. The dragons (and vampires!) became the friends I didn't have in real life (because teens suck and they made me a loser for having a sick Dad. Screw them).
I picked this book up when it came out and it got lost on my shelves in my house. After lots of cleaning, I found this book and FINALLY picked it up.
While I didn't enjoy it as much as I did in my teen years, it was such a lovely call back to see every dragon and mate I loved pop back up in this book. It brought quite the happy smile to my face. It's like seeing old friends again!
The story is goofy, it's fantastical, and it's an overall delight. It's packed full of hot and heavy romance, an insanely odd old woman who is in love with someone dangerous, two potential lovers who are going to fight at all odds to try not to be together, and lots of confusion if you haven't read all of the other books in this series.
I'll admit it was a fun read, but it just doesn't hit me the same. I'm sad about that, but I will always love Katie for her writing and the way it supported me through the worst time in my life. Read Katie's books. She's the best.
Three out of five stars.

Love love love Katie Macalister everything!
Katie sure knows how to make you laugh, that's my favorite part of all her writing. This book is no different. Definitely start from the beginning of the dragon series, you won't be sorry!

Dragon Soul is book three in the Black Dragons series. Each book in the series has a different couple as the main characters. In this installment, we have Sophea Long, a widow that is taking an elderly lady (Mrs. P) to be with a family member. Mrs. P was one of my favorite characters, she is a hoot! She has no filter and has a habit of taking things that don't belong to her. Near the start of the book in one of the stealing scenes, Sophea meets Rowan Dakar and she finds out that dragons really exist and that her deceased husband was a dragon. Sophea's eyes are opened to a new world and she has to quickly adjust to everything since there are a ton of supernatural beings along their journey to get Mrs. P safely to her destination.
Rowan Dakar joins Sophea and Mrs. P early on but he has an ulterior motive. He is on a mission to get a ring which is assumed to be in Mrs. P's possession. Sophea and Rowan grow closer as the story progresses but I was wondering if their growing feelings would be enough to sway him from his mission. There are a few twists and turns along their journey which kept my interest, but my favorite thing was seeing all the dragons in action.
This was my first Katie MacAlister book and I really enjoyed it. I loved all of the humor mixed in though I can tell it might bug some readers. The characters were all entertaining but Mrs. P stole the show, she was such a unique character. This book was a great read for me, plus who can say no to sexy dragons? Not me! I need to backtrack and get the other two books in this series. I recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal romance or dragon books with a healthy dose of humor mixed in.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Sophea and Mrs. P, who she spent the entire book escorting. Mrs. P tells some outrageous stories and tends to steal random things. I also loved that Katie's characters all seemed to be well developed and humorous. This is my all time favorite dragon book by Katie and I've read them all.
I got this book for free through a Goodreads giveaway. This is the first book I've read by Katie MacAlister but it won't be the last. This is the third book in the series (or 13th if you combine all the Dragon Septs series).
Early on there were a few times when I was a little confused. This was partially because I hadn't read the previous books, partly because Sophea, the main female character, is a little confused as well. She had thought she was living a normal existence, then finds out she's really in a world of dragons, demons, and high priestesses.
This was a good love story with some mythical elements to it that only add to the story.

"ignore my mouth, it says unimportant things."
"do you often tell yourself to shut up?"
"i do when my mind is being obnoxious."
he scooped one arm behind me and hefted me over his shoulder. i realized my boobs were perilously close to falling out of the bodice. "eek! put me down! this costume wasn't meant to defy gravity in this manner!"

I did what I never do--read the sequel before the first ones, but it was good enough to make me want to read the first two. Read it in one night.

Gosh dangit, Katie MacAlister, quit making me love your stuff so much. And I keep getting sucked back into this world, making me want to re-read all the older ones.
