my rating may change as time goes on, take these 3 stars with a grain of salt

alright friends! we did it!

༉‧₊˚. let’s start with the positives:
• i really built an emotional connection to nesta in this book that i didn’t have in the rest of the series. i was never in the camp of people that disliked nesta, but i didn’t really Get Her until this book. sjm has a way of writing character development that hits me on such a deep level, and nestas journey is (in my opinion) the strongest character development we’ve seen so far.
• nesta, emerie and gwyn’s friendship is beautiful. i love that sjm gave nesta companions outside of the inner circle AND gave emerie and gwyn storylines that hold up on their own. they’re not just there to prop up nesta, they went on their own journeys in this book as well.
• obviously the romance is one of the best things about this book- the tension is absolutely delicious, and the spice level was shocking compared to the previous books, but not unwelcome!!! though i honestly would argue the romance is second to nesta’s personal journey, which was surprising to me!
overall i had a lot of fun reading this, i really enjoy this series despite its faults…. which brings me to…

༉‧₊˚. the negatives:
‼️ major spoilers below ‼️

there were so many moments in this book that felt a bit lazy. i would go as far as to say this book is the weakest in the series in terms of plot and writing choices. which is a shame because nesta’s personal story is probably my favorite so far. but to name a few complaints:
   1. the lack of explanation around feyre not being able to try to shift or get a c-section. there’s not even an attempt to explain why they can’t do a c-section other than “every time we’ve tried the mother has died” okay but why??? you’re fae you have magical healing and rhys can make people not feel pain. im annoyed at the lack of explanation.
   2. the entire background plot with briallyn felt halfassed and i still don’t fully understand what happened and who was working with who and why. because it was honestly kind of boring and not very well written. collecting the dread trove was a big part of nesta’s story but the elements with the queen were so uninteresting.
   3. WHY would rhys not tell feyre about the threat to her life when they went through that whole thing about not keeping secrets from each other. this made me furious because it’s so incredibly out of character?? and why would the entire court agree to it?? and why would feyre be so chill about it by the next day when that’s also very much not in her nature???
   4. mor being gone for 90% of the book was very weird to me. maybe it will be explained more in the future, maybe she had a good reason for being away, but for right now it just screamed to me that involving mor in the storyline would have been too complicated. which feels lazy. it would have been nice to see nesta and mor build a relationship because right now they’re still basically strangers. like why did nesta get to build/rebuild relationships with everyone except for mor???
   5. while i really loved nestas story with the house, it was kind of confusing and convoluted that she Made the house? some of the magic in this series feels like doctor who science. where it’s just convenient nonsense that provides major elements to the story but isn’t well structured and never follows the same logic twice.
  6. my last complaint is not really a complaint bc it’s kind of funny. but why was it necessary to include nesta fantasizing about cassian and azriel???? i’m not like. mad about it. because go off. but also. it felt totally unnecessary for the story and it was at a point when we were seeing nesta start to be drawn to cas specifically, so suddenly thinking about az is a bit weird?? it was a bit fanservice-y which is FINE but like. there was no need for it? idk. i’m glad it was in there bc it’s silly but im not sure why it happened. (especially if you’re not going to follow through bestie!!!!!!!!)

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* in summary ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

i had a lot of fun reading this! i think the fun i have with this series overpowers the parts of me that think this book is a bit weak. unfortunately weak writing in one book can start drawing attention to weaknesses in other books in the series, but overall these books are very enjoyable with lovable characters and that’s really what matters most in the end. i’m excited to see what the future holds, i just kind of hope in the future sjm gets a better grip on the plot outside of the mc’s journey.

I’m unsure how to even capture what this book did to my heart. I feel like it is bursting with life, like somehow Nesta finding herself helped me to find myself too, like I also somehow contain the same power within me. It makes me want to train, to live, to fight, to fly, to just experience the world with the people I love.

Again such a fabulous writing by Maas of PTSD, stress after a loss, guilt, depression, anxiety, and so much more. Feeling unworthy of things like love and happiness after we have hurt so many. Finding ourselves again in the chaos of life and loss.

But in addition to the darker and more hopeful parts of this book, there was love and spice, danger and promise of future conflict, and potential to continue seeing the world grow as we fall more in love with this family.

Honestly I think this might be the worst one in the series. Definitely not for me.

Every second of
Feyre's pregnancy
was horrifying. Also, so sick of books that
use sexual trauma as a character-building plot device
. Used to it from male authors, but it's quite worrying to see it from an author I've heard some describe as feminist.

Don't get me wrong, I am usually a big fan of erotica and I like dramatic romantasy but this was a truly sickening read from start to finish and I wish I'd given up part way through.
