No matter your age- I HIGHLY recommend this book. It’s on my classic bookshelf and every time I reread this, I’m reminded of how precious life is.

This is Lois Lowry's first book - she went on to win two Newberry Medals. This is a lovely book. It does have mature themes - a sister dies, a 13-year-old girl watches a live birth, etc. I'd say 12 and up.

This book swept through my 5th grade class, all of the girls waiting for their turn to read it. I still remember exactly where it was shelved in the school library. At the start of the second to last chapter, I cried so hard that the words all blurred together on the page. This book was made for pre-teen pre-angst.

I've read this book a time or two before, and for some reason some parts of the plot hadn't stuck in my head completely. I'd forgotten about Meg's skill with a camera, a skill that is talked about so vividly that I really REALLY wish I could see some of her photos. I'd forgotten how skillfully Lois Lowry spins words into sentences at time, creating vivid images and emotions. And I'd forgotten some of the other plots that spin into place (seemingly effortlessly) around the summer they spend in the country. This is a beautiful story.
