This book took me over a year to read. Yes, it is that slow. Disappointing ending. Needless to say when all was said and done I wanted to throw this book at a wall.
I seriously loved Akos in this book
I have not enjoyed reading a relationship as this in so damn long
and not even the romantic one alone
Cyra and her brother, Akos and his brother
his sister and mother
Vas
I loved everyone
this book gave me a lot of feels I haven't felt while reading in a while, some of these moments weren't even that powerful
but I still tingled at them

Started off slow but I really enjoyed it, not a fan of the abrupt ending though...
To start off with. I can see where people take issue with the oppressed, brutish, wandering, less educated group being dark skinned. The way they only seem to be able to solve disputes with violence and pain. I can't comment much on how that feels from the perspective of a person of colour so I won't even try. Just know that there was a large controversy around this book because of that choice.
I didn't hate the book. It was an interesting premise, everyone having a current gift, the fate favoured families, the wandering people trying to find a place to call their own. It's a solid premise.
The scifi was there in genetic locks and special healing skins but in general I would have to agree with other commenters and say it didn't feel futuristic enough. It felt like it was set in space just not a futuristic space I guess.
Hearing from both main characters perspectives was alright, I'm the person who doesn't like too many perspectives so sticking to two was fine for me.
Cyra was an interesting character and I enjoyed her growth... Akos I could take or leave.
I like three book series from debut authors because they are never sure if their book will sell well enough to get the next two books so they make the first one able to be stand alone.
Veronica Roth, after the success of Divergent, knew she was writing two books. And thus, she cut off the first one at a very weird point for me. Normally books will have a structure where after the climax there is a dénouement and conclusion. This book ended partway into the climax. I had just figured out a plot point (I think) and thought to myself "Oh this will nicely wrap up the book, I'm finally interested to see how the tangled plot unwinds itself" and then the book ends. I didn't actually think the second book had been published because of the controversy with this one so I was a bit miffed.
I guess I'll listen to the second one but just where the first book ended already puts a sour taste in my mouth for the second (final) book.
In any event recommend to anyone looking for a young adult book with interesting world building. But keep in mind you are in it for two books. No dipping out after the first one, they are really just one long book split in half.
Rated 2.5/5 stars. That ending really peeved me off.

There are some good parts in this book, but it is just so hard to get into, and boring enough that I had to periodically skip chunks of the book in order to feel like the story was moving anywhere.
I love a good dystopian YA novel and Roth has done it again. I've already put a hold on the sequel.

wow. i can’t believe i actually finished it.
i started reading this in may, and finished it eight months later in DECEMBER. imagine that.
i was gonna drop this book, i really was. but that would ruin my never-dropped-a-book streak, so i figured, what the hell.
honestly, this book wasn’t BAD, quite frankly it was pretty good. the only thing about it is that you REALLY need to focus when you read it. like, SCHOOL-LEVEL focus.
Roth’s world-building in this book was NEXT LEVEL, but that was both a pro and a con. while it made the world that much more immersive, it also was very confusing for the majority of the time, making it easy to zone out.
the characters all have these unfamiliar names, and while that’s good that she doesn’t use ordinary names, the number of characters paired with their strange names made me L O S T.
but even i must admit, her ships were super cute. Akos and Cyra were cute, even though i seriously thought they were gonna do the dirty, which they didn’t. Cisi and Isae were adorable af, but i kinda disliked both of their characters so idk either man.
three stars for Carve The Mark, not really sure i’d recommend this but go ahead and give it a whirl.

Despite all the controversy that the book contained racism, I personally didn't find any. Plus I totally loved the female main lead!!! Cyra is one heck of a strong girl!!! Definitely give it a read.
One of my favourite lines from the book-
"Embrace the uncertainty"
