I just couldn't. So boring and confusing and too many names that are impossible to pronounce.

Ok, I really liked Divergent, so I was interested in this new series. And I like the science fiction aspect of it -- new worlds, new cultures, imaginative settings. And, honestly, it started out well and I was getting into the Kereseth family. And then.
Well, it all fell apart, and it never really came back together again. That fleeting first couple of chapters was the only real stab at character development. The plot kinda plods along, but I was ok with that -- at least portions of it were pretty. I had a hard time buying most of the Noavek/Shotet motivations, and I really couldn't reconcile the debilitating portion of Cyra's currentgift with her status as an elite warrior. It just seemed to be so random -- most of the time, she's incapacitated with pain, but not when she's practicing? Incapacitated with pain is incapacitated with pain. Pain isn't a thing you power through when it's at an incapacitating level. Or at least, that's my opinion and nothing in this book managed to convince me otherwise.
The love story seemed flat, the plot twist was visible from pretty far off, the darn thing is unresolved at the end and I honestly don't care enough to pick up a sequel. Disappointed. It felt like watching a bad movie that never resolved into the truly terrible trainwreck that would make it a cult classic.

adventurous
fast-paced
I just can't even be bothered to remember what happened within the book itself. It was just so dull that I could barely even bother to continue. I'm not even kidding.
Apart from the names of the characters, the planets and generally their skin colour everything else flew over my head. It simply failed to retain my attention on the book itself and neither would I bother trodding through this to find what I enjoyed.
The main characters had barely any motivations, and zero personality. Couldn't even be bothered to continue reading about them. And with them as the main, I could barely even read this without setting it down.
Most importantly, the pacing was just so off. It took forever to take off, had nothing happening for weeks at times and only was resolved at the end without even giving me a clear direction. Not entirely well executed at all.
So, I can't rate this higher as I cannot even find what is redeemable about it. Barely anything is, the plot is nonexistent, the characters are no better than cardboard cutouts and the ending, nothing interested me to read on.

So, I've been wanting to read this one since I read the Divergent trilogy, but it has been getting postponed somehow.
I think Veronica Roth fans will be pleased with this book. I think it's better writing and plot structure than the Divergent series. I do not think it's the next best thing in YA.
It took me a while to slog through a lot of unnecessary explanation in this book, and there were many eye rolling moments. But those flaws don't discredit the fact that Roth has tried something new -- and clearly outside her comfort zone -- by putting a toe into the science fiction world. While I would have liked more background about this new world, it seemed to have a solid foundation.
Out of the two main protagonists, one is plainly meant to represent darkness and the the lightness. Then everything they know about the world becomes shades of gray. Cyra was an absolutely fascinating character and I was so interested in her narrative. We need more badass girls who understand pain. And aren't afraid of it. Akos, on the other hand, didn't serve much of a purpose except to be there for Cyra to play off of and learn from.
I am very curious to see how this is received after it is published.

I have now read this and listened to it. I am glad for the reread in preparing for The Fates Divide as I enjoyed it more the second time as an audiobook.
As a woman who suffers from chronic pain I found this book to be extremely refreshing. I could relate to Cyra in so many ways. I appreciate this topic being brought up in fiction. I thought that the story started out slowly but kept my attention the whole time. I loved the development of Akos' and Cyra's relationship.
I really liked this book. It was kind of hard at the beginning to understand all the places and people, but it was really enjoyable once I understood. Having those extra things really make the story. An interesting take on science-fiction! Great book!
