When I asked my librarian for some recommendations for books this week she led me to the part of the library where the Patricia Polacco books are shelved. She raved on and on about her books. I was unfamiliar with them so decided to give them a try.
This was one of those stories that captivated everyone in the class. Everyone was sitting and listening and looking at the pictures intently. There is magic in this book!

Mr. Lincoln is the coolest principal ever. Eugene "Mean Gene" is a student at Mr. Lincoln's school that can be seen as a bully and all-around trouble kid. Mr. Lincoln is determined to help Eugene at school and finds a connection to birds. The two clean and ready the school's atrium so it's ready for birds. When a pair of ducks starts their family in the atrium, Mr. Lincoln and Eugene come up with a plan to get the ducklings to water.
A very touching story about the impact a good educator can make on their students. Some of Eugene's issues stem from his father, and Eugene brings some of that colorful language to school, so be aware of these insults before reading to anyone too young. I read this aloud to my middle school students and they enjoyed it. Like I said, a powerful story about the impact of a caring adult.

Nice story about hatred and race that can be combated with kindness.
Cute and all, but the perspective shifts were awkward af and hard for me to follow, let alone an emerging reader.
Mr. Lincoln's intervention with a troubled 'Mean Gene' reminds us, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world".
perfect story for today's social climate.
really great way to discuss prejudice and intolerance
i also like the approach in which the bully issue is addressed, by actually building a bridge/line of communication with the school bully.

This story is based on a true story and that always adds to the appeal for me. I certainly would be wonderful if all principals were involved with their students and classes as Mr. Lincoln and were able to problem solve with troubled students as he was.
Patricia Polacco does it again! The school principal might be too good to be true, but this is a great book for present day. Eugene is a bully at school and is the only one who doesn't like the Principal. Everybody thinks Eugene is "Trouble," but the Principal wants to try and reach him. When he discovers Eugene's interest in birds he puts him in charge of attracting birds to the school's atrium. He is able to explain that God made all the birds with all their differences just like he made people with all their differences.
I love Patricia Polacco and so do my students. This is another great book about teachers and students. Mr. Lincoln is wonderful. A good reminder that our children learn from us.
