Surprisingly different

I started off thinking this was pretty derivative, but the story takes some surprising turns throughout and kept me engaged.

On paper it looked like something I'd be into but after some time I found myself skipping through 50 pages or so and still feeling like I haven't missed much at all. Won't be checking the rest of the series. Gave 2 stars because I did finish it, just.

Started off as a relatively promising, if a bit D&D-tinged high fantasy--without the two-hexes-and-a-random-monster feel of a Jordan story. But the book isn't very well composed. After getting to know two of the main characters, one of them disappears almost completely--only to return as a two-dimensional sidekick later--and the other one becomes one of many POV characters. The problem is that the new POV characters are thinly introduced and never grow into actual people. Peter Joyce does a killer job, as always, reading the book and at 36+ hours, it's not a bad deal. But not good enough to check the rest of the series.

Good.

The story is nice, but there is very little magic for a book called "magician".

Although not a regular reader of fantasy, I was drawn into this massive piece of storytelling. It recalls many of the familiar elements of fantasy, following a boy, Pug, becoming a wizard in Midkemia, a world of elves, goblins, dwarves and other human races, chiefly through the stories of the privileged aristocrats. There are quests and battles but it stands out for focusing on a trans-spatial rift that leads to the inhabitants of a distant planet waging war on Midkemia. Drawing on medieval and ancient cultures of Western Europe and East Asia, it depicts highly patriarchal and heteronormative societies but I guess that’s standard for many classic fantasy stories.
