Abandoned at page 396. The book started off well, with the orphan Pug being apprenticed to the master magician Kuglan. One day Pug's best friend finds a ship wreck which turns out to be alien. After this point, I quickly lost interest. Kuglan, Pug, Tomas and a few others set off to warn the rest off the Kingdom and gather troops against the expected alien invasion.

I thought this book would be Pug training to gain insight into his powers. I loved the first part of the book where this happens. However, his education is cut short and he doesn't use any of his skill when he is kidnapped.

I give this up because I do not care for the characters or what happens to them. I did in the beginning, but after the invasion, all character development ceased. There is only raids and attacks and I don't see the point of any of it. I not going to waste precious hours of my life finishing the other half when I am on holiday and have a pile of enticing books waiting.

Thought it was a great, despite the lack of strong female characters. I think the basis for that was, because the book was set in a relatively medievil time, the female characters had a weaker perception than the males. Still, there were some strong characters like the Elf Queen, Princess Carline, Katala the slave & Anita, however their roles in the story took more of a backbench to the plot lines following the males.
Really interesting read but like all fantasy books I tend to get lost with the new geography. Some interesting thoughts on space-time continuum though. Reminded me of this YouTube video:

One of the masterworks of fantasy fiction, and for good reason. Feist reveals a world stunning in its detail and weaves an totally gripping narrative. The story of the simple keep boy, Pug rising to become a powerful magician is an incredible tale of fantasy fiction and one every fan of the genre should have at the top of their list.

Rather slow and winding. Lots of characters which can get confusing. Good world building and enjoyable MC's.

So disappointing! I really wanted to enjoy this but felt the best bits were taken from LOTR and the rest of the writing felt like it just started to get somewhere and then immediately spun off to a different narrative. Maybe if I hadn’t read any other fantasy this would have worked more for me?

2021 reread: 6 stars.

This is probably my favourite book of all time. I read this when I was young, but I don't feel like I read it properly, hence my re-read. Wow. I love Pug, I love Tomas, I love Laurie, Jimmy, Arutha, and everyone else honestly. If someone asks me about this book in person I will speak for an hour straight. I love Magician.
