It has been a while since I have read a fantasy, and this was a welcome re-introduction to the genre. The story followed two young boys and their development into adulthood, each having a specific talent and path, with a war between worlds as a backdrop. The first half of the book was gripping, the beginning of the second half slowed down a bit, but not enough to make me put the book down. I loved the wide array of characters, and am looking forward to seeing what happens to them next. I will definitely pick up his next book in this series.

This was my second time reading Magician, and I feel like I enjoyed it more on a second reading. It was a joy to rediscover the story and characters, and I am eager to continue my readthrough of the Riftwar Cycle.
After Tolkien, Feist is probably my main inspiration for getting into writing, and the author who made me believe it could actually be a viable career option. I know that any time I read one of his books my motivation will be freshly energised.
The characters are infinitely likeable, each with their own arcs, motivations and flaws. They come together to form a complex but satisfying overview of both the world and the plot. The world feels alive and lived in, with a history all its own; you just know this story is part of a much larger world, even without the knowledge of the multitude of books that come after it.
I would absolutely recommend this book, and the entire series. Magician is an outstanding story worth every hour spent reading it.

I was 12 when I read this, at the urging of my older brother. I wasn't aware that it's split into 2 parts in some markets. I read the whole thing as one.

The first high fantasy novel I ever read. I remember it fondly.
