Author Kristen Painter introduces us to new parts of Nocturne Falls paranormal community in The Reaper Rescues The Genie. Reaper Lucien Dupree has been retired since his powers went wonky, turning his beloved grandmother into a ghost. But somehow, he can touch genie Imari Zephara without killing her. All genie massage therapist Imari wants is be left alone to live her life, but between the wish merchant out to steal her powers, and the arranged marriage waiting for her back home, she seems doomed.

Both Lucien and Imari really are some of the most sympathetic characters in the entire Nocturne Falls universe. Between her horrible parents and misogynistic arranged fiance, no wonder she doesn't know how to deal with someone caring about her. And he's so afraid his powers will kill someone that he hasn't been close to anyone in years. Plus, they're adorable together, making this a great romance.

Love this reaper

How often do you get to root for a grim reaper’s happiness? I love his character and chance for a new life with a jinn whose had a rough life but maintains a caring if hidden heart. Very enjoyable read. Oh yeah ~ please let Greyson’s story be in the next book!

I might have bumped this to a 4 but it took a smaller story and kept going. She was trying to save herself from the wish merchant. OK that plays out now, saving from a bad marriage drama, now when you think, OK, they hit the main points even with a little drawn out part there in the end, it isn't the end.
Spoiler His daughter comes back and the only way to convince her that her mother was the "bad" guy was for wishes to be made to see the past, argh, drama. Then moving out to give them space. And why does the grandmother have to come back from being a ghost. She has a pretty good afterlife.
So more drama to prolong their commitment. It was pretty good up to there. I even like the drama of saving her from the marriage but could have done without the drama in the end. When should a story stop and leave well enough alone and not fix every little issue.

Series: Nocturne Falls #9
Rating: 4.5 stars

Retired genie, Imari Zephara, has found a life for herself in Nocturne Falls. When someone tries to capture her the peace is shattered. She turns to the one person who could protect her, grim reaper Lucian Dupree.

This book had everything I love: a marriage of convenience, a lonely hero, and a great side character. Lucian Dupree is one of the mysterious residents of Nocturne Falls. Very few people know about him and he prefers it that way since he can’t really interact with them. His reaper ability is messed up and it's too dangerous to be around people. When Imari bursts into his life he realizes how lonely he has been and how much he wishes his life could change. Lucian is one of my favorite heroes from this series. He is kind, a good father, and supportive of anything Imari wants/needs. I just loved him.

“My cars aren’t precious. Life is precious. Things can be replaced. Very little else matters.”

Imari is a retired genie who just wants to be able to live her life how she wants to. She doesn’t want to be beholden to anyone who asks for wishes or to be forced into marriage. Lucian gives her that with their marriage of convenience but he also shows her how happy she could be with him. I love the romance between these two. It was slow building and they learn to trust each other before love comes into play. I love relationships like this.

One of my favorite things about this book was Hattie, Lucians grandmother. She was a wonderful side character and I just could get enough of her. She was the grandmother everyone wishes they could have! I love when a great story has a great side character. It always makes it better.

This might be my favorite book of the series. I couldn’t get enough of these two and I really hope we see them pop up in future books.

Colourful!

I loved this book. I am glad to see two characters that showed up first in the Jane Frost Books get their own story and take a much larger step forward to show the world more of them. I loved the contrasts of love, life, colour and the worlds around them. I was cheering more than once at a couple of the speeches. I love Hattie and adore her, I really hope she turns up more as she is so much like Birdie in some ways.

Been skipping around this series because the last few books bored me. But I enjoyed this one! It follows the exact same formula as the ones that precede it but...hey! Genies and grim reapers. Fun stuff. (But also now I really want to see a grim reaper go head to head with a valkyrie...they even have the same tattoos...)
