Some very outdated views/language made this challenging to read.
This book was spooky. It's a short, punchy read. Daphne du Maurier never misses.

'Dispatch the maimed, the old, the weak, destroy the very world itself, for what is the point of life if the promise of fulfilment lies elsewhere?
It's not that I didn't enjoy this. It was a very thoughtful and unusual approach to exploring life after death. It is such an uncertain notion, and this scientific route was very interesting. However, this was also the downfall for me. I just think it was very strange - I didn't really understand the Charons? I don't know whether I completely missed the point or not, but I was just so confused by their purpose.
Despite this, the tale was very eerie and chilling, especially with Niki's experience. I think it actually worked quite well as a short story (as you may be aware, I hate short stories because they are unfulfilling and do not allow sufficient room for everything to be explored to their full potential). This was a little longer than a usual short story found in this Penguin collections, and I think it did the story justice. It built up an atmosphere, and it didn't end abruptly. I just wish things were explained a little clearer.
A lot of potential for du Maurier as an author, though. I can't wait to read her novels!
