I loved this story! It's amazing how history is reinterpreted to include vampires. This is definitely making me consider reading Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

You know those book, movie or drama series that when you're finished watching/reading it you're left wondering, "Well now what am I supposed to do with my life?" This book and its predecessor, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, was that kind of series for me. I was not expecting to love it as much as I did. I don't know what it is, but something about the retelling of Western history from the 16th to 21st centuries from the perspective of a vampire is so fascinating. Think "Interview With A Vampire" featuring an exciting, if somewhat irreverent tribute to a plethora of iconic historical figures, both the famous and infamous, ranging from John Smith to John F. Kennedy, all of whom are somehow tied into this fight between good vampires, who fight to protect human rights, and the bad vampires, who want to tear them away. If you like history with an element of horror, for example, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or the Korean drama Kingdom, you will love this series. !!BE WARNED!! though, there are quite a bit of detailed descriptions of blood and gore. I had to skip to the next paragraph a few times.

This is not what you typically expect in a vampire novel.
If you want the memoirs of a sarcastic, 400-year-old vampire who loves talking to people and discussing literature who also gets occasionally grumpy and morbid, then this is a book you'll want to check out.
Also, it's gory, but only in the fighting scenes. A lot of the prose is Henry Sturges remembering his past or reviewing his interpretations of well-known individuals, like Nikola Tesla (a great friend) and FDR. There is a bit of a twist halfway through, but it won't throw you off the storyline.
Yes, there is a storyline. No, it's not as intense as [b:Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter|7108001|Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, #1)|Seth Grahame-Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1291165397l/7108001._SY75_.jpg|6596168], but each chapter contributes to understanding Henry and his past as a whole.
If you've made it this far, congratulations! I don't know why I love Henry so much, but I hope you do as well.

It was a bit choppy and uneven generally, and there is a strange amount of detail paid to violence that distracts from the story.
But it is worth muddling through, if only because...well, how can you not want to know what happens when Abe Lincoln becomes a vampire, right?

To be fair, Seth Grahame-Smith can write. I wish he'd use his talents on something else, something less gimmicky, but those who enjoyed Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter (the book, not the movie) will probably enjoy this too. It's memorably gross, in a novel way (at one point, vampire Henry smokes a cigar and exhales through the ripped out throat of a victim so that it comes out of the victim's nostrils; at another, he reminisces about popping off vertebra of a victim like champagne corks; some Klansman are flayed and nailed to crosses; Nikola Tesla uses a death ray on Rasputin -- which still doesn't kill him). The mash-up of true history and vampire "history" can be fun, but it can also be textbook-level dry, too. I think the idea sounds more fun than the execution. That's weird, right? Maybe it's because I dislike historical fiction and, as a result, many alternate histories, and vampire violence wasn't enough for me, since it's presented so seriously. Would this be better if it was wholly B-movie silly? I have no idea, but it would benefit from not being 400 pages, for sure. The conceit wears thin, after a while, despite the surprisingly nice writing.
i liked that it included so much of history, but found it hard to get into and also i felt like they switched between first and third a lot, and since it was an audio book it was confusing.
