Fight Club 2 by Chuck Palahniuk

Review is for the individual comics that make up this graphic novel.

I am Jack's seething disappointment.

I knew this one was going nowhere fast as soon as
Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, inserted himself into the narrative as Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, and trust me when I say things only go downhill from there.

The Tyler/"Sebastian" dynamic doesn't work nearly as well in the comic medium as it does in films (thought Stewart's art and Mack's covers are a delight), and as a result, the interaction between the two Mr. Durdens and the rest of the world becomes downright bizarre at times. The story itself builds momentum as a self-destructive trainwreck from issue to issue, and by around issue 5 or so I wish I had never started reading in the first place.

Save yourself the trouble and skip this one.

I absolutely loved the first book and the film adaptation, but I don’t like this book. I feel like a sequel is pointless, and the whole thing of Tyler destroying the world and kidnapping his and Marla’s kid just isn’t gripping to me. It feels like a cash grab and I don’t like it

Overtly okay, the meta-plot sucked.

I've known about this graphic novel sequel to the original Fight Club (or perhaps Fight Club?) for a few years, but I never picked it up until being reminded about it (and Fight Club 3!) on a recent episode of the How Could You podcast. I noticed my library owned the book, so I picked it up.

It was an easy read over three days but not really an easy read because parts of it were hard to follow. It's an interesting expansion on the novel (our Narrator is medicated—bye bye Tyler—going by Sebastian, and married to Marla who misses the excitement of Mr Durden and may be replacing some of his pills with aspirin) but goes places that feel antithetical to the original novel.

Like any sequel, it revisits classic scenes—e.g., Marla is attending a progeria syndrome support group with a bunch of children who look like tiny octogenarians—but then extends past the point of making sense (I missed why these children started visiting war zones and assembled in Africa with Marla). Even zombie(?) Robert Paulson makes a few appearances as does Chuck Palahniuk himself in several scenes.

Because nothing says Tyler Durden more than breaking the fourth wall and visiting the author who's writing the book you're reading to get some plot advancement (or wrapping everything up with fans of the movie/novel complaining about the ending to the author during the ending).

Despite being disappointed in this, I'll probably still pick up the third book since it'll be free and won't take too long to read...

completely pointless sequel.
remember robert paulson? he's back (somehow!)
remember the character played by jared leto in the film? he's got super strength (somehow!)
remember the woman who wanted to have sex one last time in the film? she's still alive (somehow!)
the scenes with the author breaking the fourth wall to self-insert was terrible.
the fourth wall breaking elements with pills/petals covering dialogue was terrible.
the storyline with Marla and the hyperaccelerated aging kids was terrible.
the concept that Tyler Durden is not just a figment of the protagonist's imagination, but a "mind virus" that has been passed down for generations and now implanted into the protagonist's son was terrible.
the incredibly meta ending was terrible.

saying that, i'm still going to read fight club 3 if it ever reaches paperback.

Started off so well and had really good elements but then it just completely went off the rails and became too meta. So confused by the end, complete waste of time. Nobody should read this.
