Am I cheating my reading goal by adding short stories, maybe. But I read this and then I watched that Brandon Flowers music video and he was very hot in it.

I read this for school, and I surprisingly enjoyed it!
Not going to rate it though, because I have no idea how many stars I should give it.

Hawthorne uses ambiguity brilliantly. The effects on Brown beg the question: how much does the unreal, fantasy, shape us?

This story ended too quickly as most short stories do. Hawthorne transports his readers to Puritan times where the belief in witchcraft and devil-worshiping are real. He brings to life the feelings of not knowing who to trust, trying to determine who is a witch or who isn't, and what to do with the information of learning someone is a witch. For such a short story, Hawthorne fills the pages with images that makes the forests tangible and illicit a sympathetic response for Goodman Brown. For an assigned reading for a literature course, this was an enjoyable story worth reading.

This was a short story that came up on the Classic Ghost Stories Podcast that I was listening to in order to break up the many chapters of The Mammoth Book of Bizarre Crimes. It prompted me to start reading The Scarlet Letter - as I never have and feel it's one I should read. However, on reflection of writing the review of this short story by the same author, I struggled to recall what this story had been about.
Even when I read the synopsis to jog my memory I struggled to recall the story at all, and so I do think that my score is probably accurate in this instance, in that this is one I clearly enjoyed fine at the time, but it isn't one that's stayed with me in any way.
In being busy with starting a new job since October, and the subsequent run up to Christmas, I haven't gotten around to finishing the Scarlet Letter - or even really starting it properly, as I started it but then realised I wasn't paying sufficient attention to it and stopped as I definitely do want to pay attention when I do eventually read it. But I have added it to my 'want to read' list on Goodreads, and as I found a free audio version of it on You Tube, I do intend to read it at some point soon. So expect that to be one of my reviews in the next year.
In the mean time, if you're a fan of that author, have a listen or a read to this short story of his and see what you think. Let me know if it makes more of an impression on you than it did on me.
