If this book were a pair of pants, it would be brown bell-bottomed corduroy with chrome-finish knee patches. It was a bizarre (read: completely incompatible) juxtaposition of technology eras. The kind of fantasy science described in the functioning of Brand's prison could have been accepted with an appropriate suspension of disbelief if the surrounding environments had matched it. But because they didn't—rather, every other environment in the story functioned under the same reaches of scientific achievement we recognise today—the sci-fi parts were just jarring and ridiculous. Like chrome patches on retro pants.

I found though, to his credit, the author was able to give Brand traits of doom and invincibility similar to Hannibal Lector—his reputation of menace is so great that escape feels futile, regardless of one's measure of effort. That at least gave some interest. Unfortunately, the chrome patches issue made the book impossible to me to deem it a worthwhile reading experience.
