My second roll of the bookopoly board was 'new'. Eager for a new thriller I snatched The Last Guests by J.P Pomare from my shelves. I am a fan of his other novels including 'Tell Me Lies' and 'In the Clearing' so I was extra excited to read his latest thriller.

Claire, a dedicated paramedic and her husband Cain, an ex-solider, desperate for some extra income decide to rent out their Tarawera holiday home on the north island of New Zealand and life as they know it begins to unravel. I feel like commenting too much on the story may give away the plot twists that JP Pomare folds so neatly into his stories but some themes would be secrets, trauma, marriage and the ultimate question of how much we are able to forgive and forget?

What I love about this book was the tension of mystery that was carried right to the end of the story, the setting (some of the places that were mentioned I had visited and so it was very easy to picture), Claire and her motivations as well as the news articles, Peepshow announcements and messages to break up the narrative/ inner thoughts of Claire.

Although I did pick the ending (something that doesn't always happen for me in thrillers) I didn't have the entire piece of the puzzle until the very end. A real page turner and certainly one to add to your list if you're a thriller lover and keen to read something set in New Zealand!c
