5 stars for the first 2/3 of the book (which had great Twin Peaks vibes), and then it takes a downward turn. I wanted to embrace the bonkersness but explanations were constantly being offered in a way that kept taking me out of the narrative. Somewhat reminiscent of that time in Friday the 13th Part 2 where Amy Steel (playing Ginny) tricks Jason into believing that she is his mother, and it's explained to the audience that she's a child psychologist so that's how she could pull it off.
