Good story

I’ve just recently gotten into this genre, and started this series after finishing a similar one by Linsey Hall. I like the story development here and I’m anxious to see what happens next for Sera. That said, I’m not thrilled that the next book in the series switches protagonists, but I’ll read anyway. I want to see what happens with Sera & Kai!!

Mercenary Magic was an interesting book with some entertaining moments throughout it. In it, you will meet Sera. If the title doesn't give it away already, she is a mercenary and works for the oldest guild in San Fran - Mayhem. The characters she deals with and works with were amusing at times.. but it seemed like this plot was following the very familiar formula like so many books out there do.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the book and the characters.. but it wasn't that original to me. Which I get. If the formula works.. it works. I just think reading the same storyline over and over again is repetitive and boring. I'll still try it out though because maybe one thing will be different and change my overall opinion.. it just didn't happen with this one.

Sad face.

There are definitely things that I liked about Sera because she was sort of mysterious about a few things. Yet, I just knew secrets were going to come out at one point. So I was just sitting and waiting around for someone to figure out that she is dragon born.

If I do end up diving into the next book, I'm hoping that there's a bit more character growth between Sera and Kai, who she ends up working with (sort of). Also if the villains could be a bit more.. ya know more. Evil. Destructive. Original. Entertaining. Just more more.

Mercenary Magic is book one in the Dragon Born Serafina series by Ella Summers. We are treated to lots of action, magic, and a budding romance. It’s a fast paced read.

I very much enjoy the Legion of Angels series by Ella Summers and so, deiced to try out some of her other series. Dragon Born Serafina is a great start to the series. It’s got potential.

We are treated to a little mystery where a dark and mysterious power is taking control of mages’ minds, and Sera’s guild has sent her in to investigate. As for the villains they were a bit too obvious and their motives was lacking, but still this plot was entertaining.

Kai and Sera are interesting, but they also felt a little flat. Sera is strong and resolute, but she lacked depth. She’s spent her entire life hiding her forbidden magic from the supernatural council who would kill her for the crime of being born.

I did enjoyed the introduction into the world and characters. I liked Kai and Sera together. Kai won’t give up until he discovers the magic that he can sense in Sera. The romance is a slow build and is in that sexual tension faze.

The Dragon Born is an interesting concept and we learn a little about them, but their is more to discover.

The one thing I didn’t get is that Sera’s been hiding her whole life and at the end the Council knows she has powers and will be testing her. Why doesn’t she disappear again? Why stay? I’m confused on this part.

All and all Mercenary Magic was a delightful read and I’m looking forward to the next and seeing where things go.

Oookaaaay. Other books have done it better, and I kinda wish Kai wasn't so all knowing. Though the fact he doesn't seem to think she's hiding her magic because she's dragon born seems weird. Will read the next.
