Sherlock Holmes is definitely best as a collection of short stories rather than a proper novel.

absolutely enjoyable

* 2.5 Stars *

I already find conan-doyle's work a little hard to read and the short story format made it even worst. The story's were enjoyable but felt like they were in a rush to finish.

I do think that may have rated the book a little low, but it doesn't reach 3 stars for me. Maybe a 2.5.
While there were 12 different cases in this book, at least the first five pages of every single one was the same. The way a client arrived, where they sat, what Watson did, what Sherlock Holmes said. Now while I understand that this was an attempt to showcase a routine, but it was too much. And the cases themselves were somewhat poorly told. We don't see any kind of evidence until Sherlock points them out, while some are not things only he would notice. So in a lot of ways, the reader is stuck in the dark until the entire thing is explained by Holmes, which I think takes the fun of these things out of the book. The book would be so enjoyable if it were more generous in providing details and letting the reader have their own go before everything was explained. This is attempted throughout the book, but it's worked only a handful of times. Like in the case "A CASE OF IDENTITY" or "THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY". These two were my favourites of the book.
All in all, I wouldn't say it was a bad book, just maybe not a book for nowaday mystery readers. It is rather old and it is perfect in many ways for its own time.

I really enjoyed this. There’s something very cosy and homely about the world of Baker Street. And despite being so short they’re excellently crafted to keep your attention.
