This was my first foray into the classics tales of Holmes, but it will not be my last.

“It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

I mistakenly picked this up thinking it was the first in the series, but that title actually belongs to [b:A Study in Scarlet|102868|A Study in Scarlet (Sherlock Holmes, #1)|Arthur Conan Doyle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1519031842l/102868._SX50_.jpg|1997473]. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the third installment of the series, consisting of twelve short stories, including the well-known A Scandal In Bohemia (which people familiar with BBC's Sherlock will recall as A Scandal in Belgravia).

I don't often read mystery novels but after reading this, I'm inclined to delve deeper into this genre, though I'm not sure anyone else can write mystery like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

I really enjoyed this short story collection, I think the Sherlock Holmes format works really well in shorter stories as you still get all the mystery and intrigue in a more cohesive package. I found all the stories to be very engaging, even the ones where Sherlock is just helping someone out.

“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” And the truth is, this was a trudge.

I was hoping the short story format would be better than the earlier novels, because there wouldn’t be any time for mostly irrelevant tangents, but it just highlighted how every adventure follows the same template. Maybe I’ve just got too many more interesting books on my TBR atm.

There’s a fun dopamine hit at the end of every story as the reveals are good, and I kinda wasn’t paying enough attention to guess the twists before they happened. If the names were changed, I probably would’ve DNF’ed this, so I’m happy to take a long break from Baker Street. Also as many other people have pointed out, Watson ejaculates with his best “friend” way too many times for a straight married man.
