I really thought the professor/student thing was going to bother me, but they weren't in that relationship, so it didn't. Chris's lack of ethics bothered me. Lee was a horrible character. There was a lot left unsaid (why was Susan ok with Charles being such a dick to his kids), but it's fiction and it was fun. I did not think it romanticized a student/teacher relationship. Also there was the fake dating enemies to lovers trope and I liked the way this one played out. There wasn't any really dramatic breakup. I found Ned to be insecure and loveable and I really enjoyed Pat.

It’s possible that anyone with experience in academia might find this story implausible but since I don’t, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book started off slow but it grew on me, much like Abbott grew on Ned, and by the end I was fully invested. I will say that Abbott - unlike Ned - isn’t completely fleshed out as a character, however lovely he might be, and had the author given us more of him this might’ve been a 4.5 or 5 star read. As it stands, though, I did really like it and if you can push past the slow start (and maybe not work in academia), this is a rather sweet story that’s worth reading.

I feel too detached to the characters. There's not much interesting going on

one of the strongest points of this book is the accurate portrayal of a clearly depressed student in academia. ned is so close to my heart — with his inferiority complex & imposter syndrome compounded with feelings of inadequacy both in personal & professional life — yes, i love me some messy, disastrous characters.
i think i would've liked it to be a dual pov book tho because i couldn't really attach myself to abbott. this still works as a romance. more so as a 2nd chance one rather than a fake dating one tbh — 2nd chances in believing in oneself & not giving up & trying again.
i could definitely see myself bumping the rating to 4 stars if it was written with more of a flourish but for what it's worth, this is good.
