This book continues to be one of my favourite books of all time. Although generally slow and over descriptive, there's something about the atmosphere and build up that gets to me. In particular chapter 9 always creeps me out. The book is very different from the film but I like both for different reasons.

Glad I read it, it was alright. Parts of it were legitimately creepy, although not as scary as it could have been. I liked the ending a lot, but it wasn't enough to save the rest of the book.

The Woman in Black is a classic gothic horror novel. In many ways it's your standard run-of-the-mill haunted house tale, but executed perfectly. It's atmospheric and creepy. Susan Hill expertly builds the tension and suspense throughout, making the terror palpable. The protagonist, Arthur, is a rational and logical man that attempts to find a reasonable explanation for the supernatural happenings that take place around him but ultimately accepts that reality extends way beyond what he previously believed. The woman in black is a genuinely terrifying antagonist and the danger she poses to Arthur and those around him is very real. I really enjoyed this read. It was effectively creepy and grounded the supernatural elements into the story and setting in a way that made it feel like it's something that could actually happen.
