While not perfect, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read again at some point (I actually listened to it on Audible and the voice actor was amazing).

an be read as a stand-alone because it follows a second set of characters different from the first book in the series. A strong female character and a kind (with a splash of danger but without the toxicity) male character.

At first I was disappointed this book didn't continue with Sardelle and Zirkander's perspectives, but I quickly grew to love Ahn and Deathmaker and this book more than the first. Once I realized events were intertwined it made this book even more interesting. The ending was more action-packed than the 1st book and I can't wait to continue on with all of these characters. This book redeemed the series for me.

Full disclose, it was free on Audible.

It starts out well, the middle is super slow, then picks back up.

For being an amazing, youngest ever, fighter pilot, Ahn had SO many opportunities to actually escape, and never took them, or overthought so much she missed her chance. Sure, she killed when she needed to, but I expected more out of her the way wolf squadron was talked up in this and the last book.

I hated the truth-serum scene, yea sure the captain totally wants to hear about your backstory instead of actually usable military intelligence. It just wasn’t believable and a cheap way to have that information shared in my opinion.

I enjoyed the romance part, it was a good slow burn. I rooted for them to end up together.

I would be disappointed if I had paid more than $5 for this book, but worth listening to for free.

I like how it tied into part one, the story was pretty solid and I really liked Caslin. I'm not a great fan of Tolemek though, I felt his personality deflated a bit and he fell in love too quickly.

Still good, but 3,5* rounded down.
