I wished the story was a bit longer, the ending felt a bit rushed. Otherwise i loved the vibes and Olivia’s story. Did not expect the ending to be a sad one??

I know I'm late to the party, but V.E. Schwab is slowly but surely becoming one of my auto-buy authors.
I have to admit I was a little reluctant going into this mainly because I'm not the biggest fan of the thriller and horror genres (I get scared easily, sue me), but this book is so atmospheric I could picture everything perfectly. Reading this felt like I was there in the room with the characters. And I did have moments when I had to put the book down because I was too scared of what I was imagining (especially since I was listening to the Stanger Things soundtrack at the same time), but I was always curious to see what happens next.
Not only is this novel extremely immersive, but even with all the description, the pace is still quite fast. It also was refreshing to see a person who can't speak as the main character and to see the interactions between her and the other characters.
There were things I didn't see coming which only made me more invested in the story and its characters. All in all, I'd say if you are a fan of twists, Stranger Things and fall-ish / halloween-ish reads, this one is for you.

This was a quick and interesting read. The ending was a little bit unsatisfying, but the way the magic system works in this world is compelling.

Listened to the version read by Julian Rhind-Tutt. Enjoyed the narrator a lot, but for some reason this Schwab book did not hit the spot. I am usually a sucker for beyond the veil magical realism but this one was just a little off. I had trouble pinning down a time period when the book was supposed to take place, which threw me off. I was unable to connect with the main character at all. The story felt too long yet not flushed out enough at the same time. I hate giving Schwab such low stars but I just did not vibe with this one, bummer.

I really enjoyed this: the focaliser was compelling. The settings and magic were very atmospheric ans the plot, characters and mystery were enticing and well-developed.
There were a few plot points which could have been done better, but overall it was a great time! As expected from the love of my life v.e. schwab
