I really struggled with this one. There were some great messages throughout but the graphics and some sections were disturbing. I question whether this belongs in a middle school library.

Great middle grade graphic novel about a team of misfits who kinda play soccer. While the main story revolves around Faith (a 5th grader who signs up in the hopes of becoming friends with the popular Amanda only to wind up on the C team with the not-so-great players), we do get glimpses into the personal lives of most of the other players. The story and art are great and it is a quick read.

Wonderful middle school graphic novel. A deep look into the mean girl culture and breaking away from it.

If you liked Lumberjanes, you’ll like this book about a diverse group of kiddos on a rag tag soccer team.

I'd certainly recommend this to middle grade graphic novel readers. It's a fun story, if a little disjointed at times, and has great representation.

Far too many characters with little to no payoff.

As I’m trying to read more middle grade this year, I finally grabbed this one off the shelf because of its cover. It was pretty disappointing.
The characters are mean to each other for no reason at all. I was hoping there would be a lesson about how being mean or making fun or pushing or punching or name calling or stealing isn’t ok, but I never found that lesson.
There are too many characters to really get to know or connect with any of them. While I do appreciate the diversity of the characters (a character who speaks Spanish, one who wears hijab, a trans character, a character who’s gay, a character with a “sick” mom who is probably in rehab for addiction, even a vegetarian), it feels like diversity for diversity’s sake. Since we don’t get to know any of the characters, the only thing I know about most of them was their one defining trait.
Flashes to the fantasy daydreams the main character has make no sense.
Overall, a really disappointing book.

Good idea, good representation of diverse characters, but plotwise kind of a mess. Jumped around too quickly and to too many different places for me to follow. Would work better if restructured to make it more clearly episodic, with Faith's imagination spots of the castle as a framing device. That part of it worked really well for me.
