Great premise. Lovely characters. Horribly slow.

Loved, loved, loved. Such a cozy read.

Eleven year old Bea gets sent from London to live with the Gregory's during WWII. This coming of age story follows both Bea and her surrounding families lives.

This book very much reminded me of "When a Tree Grows in Brooklyn" which I also adored. This book was heavy character driven (not plot driven) which made for an easy ready. I liked the pacing and different perspectives. The imagery of baking, gardening, Maine, family, everything was so warm that it transported me to each of those scenes. I'm glad through so sadness, everyone ended up finding peace.

I felt this was more of a lit fic novel than a historical fiction book based since only the first third of the novel mentioned the war. Regardless, it was still a beautiful story I enjoyed getting wrapped up in.

Started off strong, sort of plateaus around the middle of the book. It felt like so many details were missing -what did the letters say? Etc

This story did a great job of exploring themes of growth, friendship, family, love, war, and home throughout life and how it transforms and changes.
I found the similarities between Millie/Nancy’s relationship and Bea/Rose’s relationship later really well done. It was interesting to see how the way they both thought of each other based on preconceived notions changed over time as they came to understand each other better.
The story painted an immersive picture of nostalgia and the impact people have on our lives even after they’re gone. It was relaxing and well written, and the characters were relatable and likable, while still each showcasing their own flaws.
