DID NOT FINISH

Not looking forward to reading more

An English girl sent to America for safety during World War II finds that her five-year sojourn in an American family marks her--and them--for the rest of her life. It's very nicely written and I really enjoyed the beginning part where she's living in the family. The later parts dragged on a bit. The plotline seemed familiar and then I realized it was like "The Summer I Turned Pretty" where the girl has a lifelong relationship with two boys who both vie for her romantic attention.

Wow! This is a great story. Beatrix is a young girl when she leaves London to live with a family in America. Her parents wanted her to be safe, away from the German bombings of WWII. The character development throughout this book is done of the best I’ve read. I liked how short the chapters were; titled with names reflecting the perspective of the storyline. Beatrix is placed in a home with two boys about her age (one older, one younger). The family dynamics create an interesting story. I like how there’s a timeline at the bottom of the page like page numbers to following the passing of time. You follow the children through youth, young adulthood, school, life changes, death, families together and apart. The novel begins in 1940 and ends in 1977. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story.
