Firstly I feel like this book reads more as contemporary fiction with a little historical backdrop.
I really wanted to love this book, I actually really enjoyed the audiobook and I think that’s why it didn’t feel very slow to me. I also didn’t mind how it was spread out over the years but I also feel like I would have enjoyed the book more if it was just the first half more detailed. I disliked that so much of the focus was on William, he’s an unlikeable character who didn’t become more likable in the end and I didn’t connect with any of the characters except maybe Mrs. G.
It was a different take on a WW2 novel which I appreciated and enjoyed, I just wish that was more the focus.

This was so hard to rate because it was written in such a unique way. It was very character driven and narrated in such a way that you never saw any of the scenes the characters reminisce about, which on the one hand was irritating because you could never see any of the details (like what did the characters talk about, what was their body language, what even happened!?) but this style of writing lent to the nostalgic tone of the novel which is something I liked about it. Basically I liked the story but my curious nature wasn’t satisfied with the lack of details.

I wish the whole book was part 1 and she didn’t write about their lives after the war after Bea returned to London. I enjoyed the book until about 40% and then the book was terribly dull. I didn’t need the rest, I just wanted more of their lives as kids.
