After every story, some adult’s voice from my childhood said, “That’ll learn ya.”

Sort of reminded me of the darkness of numerous Aesop’s Fables but with more children as main characters. In the author bio at the end, there’s a statement that I think rings true about how most of the stories will be viewed. It’s along the lines of: the terrible things that happen in these stories will probably be harder for adults to stomach, but children—and the child that every adult once was— will likely laugh at the absurdity.

When I was little, I used to go to sleep with my thumbs safely tucked away in my palms just in case the scary dude with the big-ass scissors decided to visit me in my sleep. I have no idea why my parents thought this was a nice book for a child but it was the 70's and my parents are German so I guess it made sense at the time.

I have GOT to have a copy of this book. Very grusome for a childrens book but very much worth the read. Thank you GR for recommending this book to me. Personal favourite I think was the girl in the red shoes.

Update: I have a copy of it... Still love it.

I'd read all these online, but I stumbled upon a copy in a second hand bookstore yesterday (I love it when that happens). Really a 19th-century Edward Gory, deliciously creepy little rhymes and amazing illustrations.

Lustig gereimte Kurzgeschichten.
