I am now such a fan of this series! This one isn’t even out yet and I’m already deeply impatient for the next one. I really enjoy the detective, Caius, and his fellow detectives. The explorations of class and race in Britain are done really thoughtfully and with humor, and the mysteries are so interesting and tight! Really well paced, and I thought the way the two mysteries came together was solid. These are such fun reads and I hope there will be a million.

On the last Saturday in August, a group of politicians and socialites are trading gossip titbits whilst sipping Pimms at a Richmond garden party. They’re all completely unaware that the police are just a stone’s throw away, pulling a body out of the Thames. But is the drowning a tragic accident or do some of the guests seemingly know more? Detective Caius Beauchamp is assigned the case and gets an unexpected tip in solving the case, discovering the victim had enemies in high places.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this when I first started reading but I was instantly drawn in and engrossed in the mysteries being solved. I really liked how the character’s lives start to intertwine together, allowing you to guess just how the story will end up unfolding, keeping you guessing throughout. I really enjoyed the writing style which is a great mix of character description alongside the delving into the mystery aspect, planting all the necessary clues to be discovered whilst reading.

I hadn’t read the first book in this series, ‘The Other Half’ but after reading ‘The In Crowd’ it is safe to say I will be! This does work as a standalone title though, I feel reading the first book would maybe enhance the character connection but I don’t feel anything was lacking from starting at this title. A mystery that is skilfully brought together for a satisfying ending, paving the way for some more further titles in the series hopefully!

ARC reviewed for Net Galley.

Overall a great idea, terrible execution.
