Lovable fuzzy aliens, snarky disgraced lawyer protagonist, and his faithful dog who knows how to set landmines, who wouldn't love this funny sci-fi novel? I laughed often as I listened to the great Will Wheaton narration and it made me stay on the treadmill even longer waiting to see what happens next. Audiobook would be great for a road trip.
This teeters between a 3 and a 4 for me. The titled definitely telegraphs some of the plot but I enjoyed the journey. If this was my first Scalzi I may have rated it higher but I can't help comparing it to Old Man's War.

Short Review - I like remakes. If you do not, then you might want to skip this book (most of the negative reviews on Amazon say that this did not need a remake.) John Scalzi has taken the basic storyline and characters and re-written the 1962 Beam Piper book Little Fuzzy. This is a story about first contact with an alien race. If you are interested the kindle version of the original story is free and the audio is on the Audible.com file.

Goodreads has been recommending this book to me since the first time I ever looked at recommendations so, finally, I read it. Actually, I listened to the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton and it was awesome. I liked the characters & the story was good.
I didn't like this one quite as much as those in the Old Man's War series, but it was quite enjoyable. Relativity short, and Scalzi is always easy to read.
I adored this book. Jack Holloway is a survey contractor for a mining company that is stripping a planet of its resources. He stumbles (i.e. blows up a mountainside) upon an incredibly productive seam of gemstones, from which he will make millions. But the mining company is not exactly on the level. And more importantly, Holloway encounters some curiously smart, very cute fuzzy cat-like creatures on the planet. The question is, are these fuzzy creatures sentient or not? Because if so, neither the company nor Holloway has any right to the planetary resources.
The characters are fantastic. I loved how morally complex Holloway is. The legal shenanigans are entertaining and tense. This is almost as much legal thriller as it is sci-fi novel.
Read this in one sitting and am grinning with delight after having finished it.

I don't know why I don't read more science fiction. I have read 16 SF titles since I started keeping track and I have given most of them 4 stars. Either I am pickier about the SF novels I pick up or I just don't have a clue about my own tastes.
Fuzzy Nation is no exception. I started this Saturday night when I couldn't fall asleep and then stayed up too late reading "one more chapter". Jack Halloway is an independent contractor who is working for a very large corporation, ZaraCorp. ZaraCorp makes all of the present corporations look like slacker since ZaraCorp will apparently stop at nothing to make a buck. Jack is pretty mercenary himself and the battle between Jack and ZaraCorp is vicious. Unfortunately, the world they are stripping of all valuable materials might have a sentient species. And that will make making money extremely difficult for both Jack and ZaraCorp.
I don't think I ever read the book by H.Beam Piper called Little Fuzzy. Scalzi borrowed his world from Piper. However, I was pretty sure where the plot of Fuzzy Nation was going. I was right, but the ride was wonderful. I am looking forward to more books by John Scalzi.
I recommend this book to science fiction readers - this is not fantasy. This is space colonization, aliens and humans. Also one wonderful dog. Also if you don't read much SF, but want to try a bit, I recommend this to you. Scalzi is a good writer who understands the requirements of science fiction readers.

I finished it in one sitting of three and a half hours. So I'd say it's a pretty engrossing read.
