A first contact story involving a profit-driven corporation, a snarky disbarred lawyer turned prospector, and adorable cat-like bipedal creatures. Scalzi acknowledges in the introduction this is his take on the novel [b:Little Fuzzy|1440148|Little Fuzzy (Fuzzy Sapiens, #1)|H. Beam Piper|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348972417l/1440148._SY75_.jpg|1876891], which I have not read, so can't make any comparisons. As expected from Scalzi, dialogue is quite funny, but the main character has a bit more depth - a morally grey character, set to make obscene amounts of money through one of his discoveries, until things turn a little fuzzy. The story moves along at a very fast pace, and it features highly satisfying courtroom drama. Very fun read!
Loved it! Wil Wheaton is the perfect narrator for this book!
This is the type of book that really deserve another 200 or 300 pages, I would literally read on and on. Jack Holloway is not your typical lovable righteous protagonist, but he is the right person for saving the Fuzzys. He is smart, cunning and surprisingly dependable. The plot line is one of the best I have read in a while. It is complex but not confusing, it feels random yet kept your interest, everything is mentioned for a reason and it all comes together in the end. This is a fantastic book.

An entertaining but somewhat slight retelling of the H. Beam Piper novel about a prospector who finds some cute, possibly sentient aliens. Breezy and fun but hardly essential.
I liked it well enough, but honestly, it felt like the novelization of a movie where the script was written by somebody who only half-remembered the book. I definitely would not recommend it over the original (which is still in print, by the way).

Clever and fast-moving plot which is easy to understand yet offers a lot of complexity under the surface. I doubt this is a book you re-read, because once you finish it the plot points are simple and easy to remember.

I didn't expect the final act of the novel to be essentially a courtroom drama. The payoffs there were VERY satisfying. While I am not sure if this book will prompt me to go back and read the original book this was based upon, I did really dig this book. The twists were always one step ahead of me, and when they did occur, I was incredulous; I couldn't believe that I didn't see them coming.
I just began reading books by Scalzi - this is the 5th book I have read of his in the past few weeks- and I am becoming a huge fan of his writing style. I may slow down, I don't want to get burned out. I think I will save Old Man's War for later in the year. I'll see how things go.

A pretty fun and fast read. A sci-fi Grisham might be a good description.
