This one was a bit of a slow starter for me. I had read about a quarter of the book and nothing really seemed to be going on. Once the trial started it picked up and I found it pretty interesting. I think this is the first legal thriller I've read though so maybe it's standard to have so much build up at the start.
Kane was a great bad guy, but I thought the bit about him not feeling pain was a little OTT. I liked how meticulous he was and how much planning went into his crimes. The crimes felt very organised but also believable. The endless significance of the number 13 was pretty clever too.
I didn't realise this was part of a series, but I don't think you need to read the others to enjoy this one. I liked the sections on Jury selection and what sort of people the prosecution and defense like to have on their side. Also I have read a lot of True Crime and it was interesting to read a court scene in a fictitious setting instead. I found the trial itself to be the best part of the novel.
Overall, this was a pretty decent legal thriller. It took a bit too long to get going in my opinion but once it hits its stride it's a real page turner.

Did not grab my attention, probably because I am a mood reader and I wasn't in the mood for court mystery

I was halfway thru before it really got interesting for me. I liked the killer’s POV. The plot twist was .. confusing? There were a lot of fast words used (like last 15% of the book) to “wrap things up”. I like a little more .. & the ending of the case/book was like a TV crime show episode. Cut to the credits.
