Eye-opening and heart-wrenching. Shows how a country fell to religious fundamentalism through the eyes of a child and how demonstrations and revolutions can get co-opted by foreign colonialists or religious fanatics.

This book made me very uncomfortable in a million ways but all of them were probably good for my personal growth and understanding. Still, didn't have to like it. I'll probably read the second volume to be a completionist but that doesn't mean I'll enjoy it.

Really what kickstarted my fascination and love of graphic memoirs. I read it on repeat to the point that I had pages memorized.
Book #1 is much stronger than Book #2, but both are equally important in sharing the author’s life story. #2 is much slower than #1 pace-wise, and feels much less eventful.
