It's amazing how much power can lie in just some lines on the page... and words too, of course.

I decided to read this after it was added to a World Lit reading list at the school where I teach English. It is an autobiographical graphic novel about the author's experiences growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution from about 1979 to 1984. I recall the events of the Iranian Revolution, especially the takeover the American Embassy in Teheran in 1979 so I did find this story interesting and I learned something of this historical time period. I am not a huge graphic novel fan however, and probably would have just preferred a non-fiction history book or autobiography. I doubt I'll read part II of the book, although I might, since it would be interesting to find out what happened to the author in adulthood.

This was a great, interesting, and educational graphic novel memoir. I definitely shed some tears at some parts. Excited to read the next volume.

The sad reality.

Recommended to everyone, even people who don't read graphic novels

Wow. A lot of the politics went over my head. I could reread the whole thing again just to make sure I get the names right for regime changes. But Marji is an amazing character and you can't read this book and not think about what a fundmentalist take over (of any kind) would like for us today.
