I've owned this FOREVER and finally read it. I liked it more than the first installment of the series. The characters are more likable in this "mystery" and the story is more interesting. All in all, a decent read. Not sure I'll read any more of them though...we'll see.
The first instalment was ok, this one was possibly better as far as the storyline goes, but I've worked out what my problem is with this series. I don't like Isabel Dalhousie. So I think that in future I'll stick to the Ladies Detective Agency and Mma Ramotswe.

It was only OK. I enjoyed the descriptions of Scotland. The title should be Friends, Philosophy, and Moral Ethics. There were no lovers or chocolate!
Friends, Lovers, Chocolate, the second book in Alexander MCCall Smith's The Sunday Philosophy Club series is better than the first. I found the story more enjoyable, partly due to my personal interest in the concept of cellular memory. It helped that I got the hang of how Isabel's mind works and her philosophical musings made sense to me. All in all, if you want to read this series, I suggest starting with the second book. Trust me, you're not missing any details because all the pertinent ones are mentioned in this book as well.
I was contemplating 3.5 stars.. then... I reached the end of the book and it was so anti-climatic and abrupt I was a Lil annoyed.
I have to say though isabel gets annoying in later books once she gets with Jamie.
I read one of the later titles in the series and she really made me roll my eyes. . wonder how she will be like in book 3..

I didn't like this nearly as much as I liked the first book of this series. The main character really annoyed me throughout most of the book and the plot itself was just incredibly meagre. I don't think I'll be continuing this series. Also, "Friends, Lovers, Chocolate" has to be the worst book title ever.
this second book is WAY better than the first... and I loved the first. I’m so happy about how much more happens in this book. way more scandals, focus on the mystery, and just overall a way more engaging story. I really loved this one. I’m really teetering between 4 and 5 stars, if I could give it a 4.5 I would.
Delightful tale I listened to on CD during a road trip. I had heard of this author but had never had a chance to pick up anything from him. I do love the characterizations, especially Isabel's wandering off in musings - usually philosophical, oftentimes bemusing. My only disappointment was a less than ideal resolution (which was ironic, considering that the last few chapters openly discuss resolution, esp. in music). Some aspects of the mystery seemed to be dismissed entirely, or otherwise breezed over as coincidences. What DID happen to Rose Macleod and her partner? There seemed to be some unfinished business there that left me calmoring for more.
