I was watching the movie for this for the first time in almost a decade when I realized that I was remembering the movie differently than it actually was. Then I realized; oh! It's because I read the book so many times that my mental images are what are seared in to my head, not the movie. It was an odd feeling.

I read this when I had nothing to read, and found I really enjoyed it.

I thought this book was really great to start reading in the summer time. I really enjoyed the characters in this book full of action, horses, and adventure in this book. This book is pase on a horse and a young boy named Alec Ramsey finds out the hard way and take it easy. After the wreck of the ocean liner the Drake, Alec must find food for himself and the stallion which he calls the Black. Days pass and with no sign of any rescue ship, Alec begins to loose hope. Suddenly, Alec sees two men rowing ashore to rescue him. They take Alec and the Black on another ship where he is taken back home to New York. Alec is allowed to keep the Black at the Dailey's stables which is right down the street from his house. With the help of Henry Dailey, Alec trains the Black into a competitive race horse. Meanwhile, the two greatest horses in the country are schelduled to race in Chicago only weeks away. Henry and Alec enter the Black into this race. Will the Black be fast enough to beat Sun Raider and Cyclone the fastest horses in the country? Find out when you read The black Stallion. This is a heart warming story that shows that hard work and determination really do pay off and off. I would recomend this book to anyone that likes a book that is packed with adventure and horses and action as well!

Alec and the Black Stallion are the only survivors from the Drake. They form a bond. To me its one of respect and loyalty. Alec is able bro get the Stallion to listen to him. They do make it home to New York. Henry helps Alec to train the Stallion. They get him in a race against Cyclone and Sun Raider. The Black comes out on top. I enjoyed the bond between Alec and the Stallion. It shows what loyalty looks like when its strong and deep.Makes me want a horse to have a bond with.

I can definitely see why this has been such a popular children's book. There is a sense of adventure with the main character's shipwreck and rescue, a sense of suspense about what will become of the horse, and of course, lots and lots of talk about how majestic, large, fast, and wild the horse is, which I presume is what horse lovers most enjoy reading about. On top of that you have a kid (well, teenager) who is the only one able to tame and ride said horse. A kid's dream!

The book came out in the 1940s, so it felt a bit dated — and there's one very cringeworthy stereotype of an Italian character — but I think you could generally hand it to a kid today. The book is predictable, but not in a bad way — for a kid who is into the story, I imagine they'd be hanging onto every word to see what happens. Reading it as an adult in the 2010s I certainly didn't find it to be anything revolutionary, but I ended up really enjoying the read and not wanting to put it down.

A friend had a box set for the series for some reason and he gave it to me.  The book is fine for a middle grade reader.  Would certainly appeal to horney horse-girls.

Read this book out of spite because I was trying to get my 9yo to read it and he wouldn't. He said it was too old. Well, I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. It's definitely timeless, beautifully written and a thrilling read. I couldn't wait to hear what happened next.

I can't believe I didn't read it when I was younger. Although I never read what my mom wanted me to read when I was a kid either.

I did a little bit of summarizing the longer passages, but this book a great one to read together.
