The Black Stallion is a beautiful children's book about the bond between a boy and a wild black horse. The horse saves the life of the boy and they are stranded on a deserted island. When they are rescued the boy manages to convince the Captain of the ship to let him take the horse with him to New York.

There are around 20 books in the series. This is a wonderful book to read to your children, especially children who like animals. Whilst this book was first published in 1941 it is a timeless story that will appeal to children through the ages.

Rereading this story from my childhood was exhilarating! I had forgotten how captivating the story of the Black and Alec’s relationship as they grow together in the legendary horse racing sphere. The writing style is definitely catered to younger readers as intended, but I still absolutely loved it as an adult. What a wholesome story!

P.s. It was fun to also remember that kids used to only go to school until 120pm….oh what that must have been like

Je les lue à mes 10 ans, c'est un livre que j'ai vraiment adoré lire. Je le trouve vraiment génial.

I revisited this as an adult and WOW was this book written in 1941. As a kid, the consistent casual racism didn't register but HOO BUDDY it is sure in there. This book is pure wish fulfillment with zero character development, and not even beautifully written. The same descriptors were repeated endlessly. It got 2 stars because of nostalgia but....yeah I don't need to read it ever again.

Nice trip down memory lane. I was obsessed with these books a young girl - reading them over and over. I had no idea Walter Farley was in high school when he wrote the first one.

They said oh you just got back from being shipwrecked on a deserted island? Yeah you can take one day off school bud

I probably read more in this series but I don't really recall more than just this first one, which I really enjoyed. Again, a horse book, probably mostly enjoyed by people who like horses and horse books.

The way this book contributed to my being a horse girlie…

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I just wish they could have figured out a name for the horse.

A simply told story of a boy's courage as he survives a shipwreck and ends up riding the fastest horse in the country.
