I’m a sucker for everything about this book, and it just happens to be well written, too. (I’m even happy to call this a 4.5, for me personally, though I can understand some of the criticism.) More complete thoughts to come, at Roof Beam Reader. Full review is posted at Roof Beam Reader: https://roofbeamreader.com/2018/08/24/sometime-after-midnight-by-l-philips/

I don't... even know...
It was so fucking good (sorry for the language). I've been excited for this book to come out for several months and I just read the whole thing in a single sitting. Books with music can frustrate me sometimes because I just want to know how it sounds but I feel like knowing how the music in this book sounded might have just ruined the atmosphere that surrounded the characters song writing. I feel like if t were ever made into a film or something it would be extremely hard to make sure that the atmosphere created in the film would live up to (or even close to) what I felt reading it.
Even just imaging Nates fathers music (you'll get what I mean when you've read it) kinda set up this magical atmosphere of utter crazy genius.
Honestly I just loved it so much.

DNF. Yknow sometimes I find myself feeling bad for not finishing books but I believe in life we can’t just keep reading books we’re not interested in. With that being said this book had a very strong start, but as it went on, the magic of the first few pages began to dissipate. I found myself more interested in the side characters then the main one and this book is about music but it didn’t /feel/ like it was about music at all.

This book was so cute and enjoyable. I love the portrayal of the main relationship and the communication and understanding that took place throughout both of them truly wanted the best for each other. I also enjoyed the normalization of queer relationship, because nowhere throughout the book was there any homophobia that I could indicate.

Trigger warnings: fatphobia, mention of mental illness (schizophrenia), mention and description of suicide

This was the first book I’ve enjoyed in a long long time, even though it wasn’t perfect. I really liked the characters and kept guessing what would be the big reveal but I didn’t expect what it was. Also it’s more Romeo & Juliet than Cinderella in my opinion, more enemies to lovers, which is one of my favorite tropes. All in all, I enjoyed the romance part and was rooting for the main couple. :)

I struggled to decide whether I should give 3 or 4 stars, so maybe 3.5 ⭐
But here is my issue with many of books in the genre. The protagonists shouldn't be 17 and 18 years old, 2 boys at that age, don't have the maturity this books and this story needs. Make them 20, 22 but not 17... At least make them a legal age to have sex!
I liked the story beginning, the building of the plot and then it just deflates...
