A must read for anyone interested in politics--at the very least, you will understand all the references to Machiavelli!

Book 33 of 2023: The Prince by Machiavelli

Another reread. I first read this in college. I remember thinking Machiavelli was very egotistical in his assumptions of human nature.
After a reread, I have to admit he had a good understanding of human nature. Does that make me disillusioned?

I really like this modern translation by Tim Parks. Fascinating insight into strategy and maneuvering in politics. I'll try to share some of my favorite passages at some point.

More dimly remembered than I'd like to admit. I remember that it didn't shock me. Machiavelli struck me as basically conscientious, but dealing with the realities of gaining, wielding, and holding power. It is quite possible to be a high-minded Machiavellian or political realist.
