The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy

Doing the dishes a moment ago I found myself reflecting on The Passenger. Even though it didn't ultimately matter I started thinking about the mystery surrounding the feds. What they wanted with Bobby. The paradox surrounding the answer to their mystery. For Bobby to learn why he’s fucked he would need to confront it head on and receive his proper fucking. It dawned on me. That’s everything in this book. Like Sproule what’s wrong with Bobby is wrong all the way through.

The letter, suicide, salvage diving while minimizing drowning. Bobby is afraid of conclusions. Part of him desperately wants to commit suicide but instead day dreams of his death while fantasizing about meeting his sister in whatever awaits. And, like death, to avoid prison Bobby creates his own prison in Ibiza wasting away in his Quixoten windmill. Taking time of course to talk to transients at the bar, swimming in the dark waters to tempt death, pray to no one, and speak with ghosts.

A very intriguing read and a new Cormac McCarthy novel is a treat, especially after so long.

I found this a rather curious read, very deep and a typical CM affair, a lot over my head but I am intrigued about Stella Maris when it comes out to make an opinion on this when it is complete. The characters were great, although the sisters scenes with the "people" were irritating to me.

All in all a good read but not CM's best, but lets wait and see until reading Stella Maris next month.

As usual McCarthy's language is beautiful and enthralling. He returns to familiar themes of grief and penance through isolation and suffering. Much like life the story leaves much unresolved but I wasn't unsatisfied.

Hard to read, lack of connection to characters, no motivation to find out the ending.
