Documenting a year of becoming locavores - with humor and shared wisdom. Interesting read to understand real food and the (over)growth of agribusiness.

When I was twelve my family moved from the desert to an acre mini-farm with cows, a horse, fruit trees and an unbelievably time-consuming garden which grew the first "real" food I had ever tasted. What a revelation! During the intervening years I have become more unconscious about my food choices and appreciated the wake-up call.

This was a highly enjoyable memoir especially for those interested in living more sustainable lives. I am a vegetarian so all the talk of turketys, pigs, and chickens was unnecessary, but still entertaining as it was not too graphic. I also really liked all the recipes.
The is one I will refer back to many times.

Compelling. But I could’ve done without the feature pieces by her husband and daughter.

I wanted this book to be something it wasn't. I wanted it to be a story of a family eating food they grew themselves. While that is, technically, what this book was about, it just didn't have enough of that. I wanted more about Lily and her chickens! Instead it was a big boring lecture about being a locavore. Snore!
Who picks up this book if they aren't already interested in eating good, local, tasting food? So why am I being lectured?
