Animal, Vegetable, Miracle documents the year that Barbara Kingsolver's family sought to eat only food they grew, harvested, or purchased locally. The memoir grew on me as I read. At first, the tone felt heavy-handed and preachy, but it became steadily more forgiving as the book continued. Reading this changed how I look at and make choices about food. Even though I doubt I will ever grow my own food, I think that Animal, Vegetable, Miracle will permanently encourage me to seek out more local and/or organic products, cook more from scratch, and be more intentional about my food choices.
