While this book was amusing and had some great thoughtful lines, there were also things I didn’t like.  There was quite a bit of bad language and mystical stuff bordering on witchcraft.  For more mature audiences.

First, I want to say this is definitely not a good intro to the Cosmere for new readers. This book has tons of references to the wider universe Sanderson has created, some of which could be considered heavy spoilers for some of his other books. I would say that before reading this, you should have at least read Elantris and The Way of Kings, as well as the first Mistborn trilogy (The Last Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages).

As a fan who has read all of those and more, I absolutely loved this book. It’s a fantastic casual story, narrated by everyone’s favorite worldhopper (if you know, you know), which gives the story a whole new style compared to any of Sanderson’s other novels. The narrator is witty and sarcastic, and it’s a lot of fun hearing him tell us a full story in his own unique way. And I do mean “hear,” because I listened to the audiobook read by the fantastic Michael Kramer. If you’ve listened to The Stormlight Archive then you know how good he is. I will say, however, that I felt his accents were a bit off at times, and there was one character in particular who couldn’t decide if she had a Jamaican, Cockney, Australian or French accent, sometimes within the same bit of dialogue. However this is pretty easy to look over, and obviously not a problem if you read the book rather than listen to the audiobook.

Tress of the Emerald Sea is a really fun, fairly lighthearted novel that’s great when you need something that isn’t too heavy. I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts, watching news commentary on YouTube, etc and that stuff can be really draining. So it was really nice to just pop on this book and escape into a wild swashbuckling pirate fantasy adventure for 25 hours (the runtime of the audiobook). If you’re a Cosmere fan, this book is essential reading. I feel like lately Sanderson is cinching a metaphorical loop, bringing the worlds of the Cosmere together and giving us a lot of answers. So RAFO! (If anyone reads this who's not a Sanderson fan, that's an acronym meaning "Read and find out," a common response he gives during Q&As when a question's answer would reveal spoilers)
