Not quite as good as I remember from my childhood, but still a cute read.

My big sister used to read this to me. I still enjoy reading it to my kids.

This book was tedious. It’s quite long, and even I got tired of reading it after a while. My little ones just don’t like sitting still for a longer book like this one.

You can tell this book is older by the illustrations. They’re not very vibrant, which my kids enjoy more right now.

This book would be better for older kids that are in school already. I don’t see us rereading this book.

This book was recommended for 2nd graders in the Summer Brain Quest workbook. My 7 year old son was not a fan. He thought it was boring. It's a very simple story that, in a way, reminded me of Goodnight Moon, however not as clever. For the modern child, the story doesn't offer much excitement.

Toddler likes it, I find it a little dry. 5 stars as a children's story, 1 star as a bear safety guide.

This is one of those books that makes me think I don't know how to rate books.

This is a children's classic, and a Caldecott winner. And I've always felt sort of "meh" about it.

When I was a kid, I thought the story looked boring because of the navy and white, old-timey illustrations. (As an adult, I can see how detailed and beautiful they are, but I still wonder if little kids now would find them boring.) The encounter with the bears also scared me, because well, it wouldn't turn out that well in real life.

Maybe I'm just neurotic, I dunno.

3 stars!

As a child, my favorite pictures were the ones of Sal and her mother in the kitchen. I remember looking at those details, which even then created a scene of an old fashioned life, and feeling the satisfaction of canning blueberries. As I got older, I loved following the parallel structure of the story and the dramatic irony of the bear being with Sal's mother and Sal being with the bear's mother. Reading it with my own children, the highlight was always the sound of the blueberries falling into the pail, "Kerplink, kerplank, kerplunk!"

This is one I've read about a thousand times. Just love it.
