This book definitely picked up from the last few in the series. I enjoyed it, but I'm glad to be closer to just being able to keep up with one a year. His writing style leaves gaps and unclarity, not in the solving of the case, but just in following a particular scene or transitioning to a new scene.

Walt and Henry are asked to investigate an accident in Hulett, Wyoming just over the state line from the Sturgis Bike Week event. From there Walt begins a crime spree for the ages, including stealing evidence, obstructing a federal investigation, assault, breaking and entering, theft, speeding, reckless endangerment, tampering with a crime scene, and stealing a car. I've probably forgotten a few others. I'm not against Walt Longmire breaking bad if its for character reasons. But here it's not. It's mostly just lazy plot shortcuts. Add to that two absolutely absurd Vic scenes, the continued weirdness of two guys in their 70s (when is this series set anyway?) behaving like badass supermen, and a "mystery" where the ends don't meet and you've got another clunker in this series.

Another fine installment. More compelling than the TV show, but I felt that Walt and Henry have far too many forgotten and rediscovered talents. I encourage Craig to stick with their standard sleuthing. Maybe even explore a low profile, non exotic case, where your writing, wit, insight and allusions can stand on their own. You are a good writer, you don't need an ever changing landscape of environs to make your work stand out.

The gang’s all here in this installment of high plains drama. It was a pleasure to have Henry’s life fleshed out a little more deeply. I also enjoyed how irritated Walt got at Henry’s quoting Sir Author Conan Doyle. It seems, like the rest of us, even my favorite fictional sheriff suffers from a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

A solid Longmire book, this time involving motorcycle clubs, ATF etc.

This fits the usual Longmire format, but I increasingly fear that Johnson is running out of material for what could reasonably happen to a sheriff in Wyoming. In addition to stretching for mysteries, I also feel that Johnson has begun stretching the limits of the law and Walts role as investigator. This book featured a lot of activity by Walt and Henry that is illegal and/or at the very least activities that would make so much evidence inadmissible that no prosecutor would ever even take the case let alone be able to convict the guilty parties. I know this is a contemporary western mystery series, but even in Wyoming, there are some legal restrictions --- even on lawmen....

The Build up are always the parts that give the greater enjoyment. While this particular instalment has everything needed to enjoy it doesn’t quite reach sizzle point.

Johnson knocks it outta the park again. In this one we and Henry start out on a little journey and, as usual, run into a little trouble. Dog is there with them and Vic shows up after a while. Great as always!!
