This was an EMOTIONAL book. It was funny, insightful, poignant. It is an interesting twist on a time traveling trope. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to read it now due to things going on in my life (warning - check trigger warnings) but I was so intrigued that I had to keep reading and I'm glad I did. Until the future.

This was my first Emma Straub novel and I really enjoyed it! Her writing style is so easy to read and it almost feels like you are conversing with a close friend. This Time Tomorrow centers around Alice, a 40-year-old woman who finds herself back in 1996 on her 16th birthday after some mysterious time travel. There are some major 13 Going on 30 vibes…but in the opposite direction. I think that is one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much.

This Time Tomorrow asks readers the question, “If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be? And would it alter your entire future?” It didn’t give me those 5⭐️ vibes, but it was pretty close. It also made me think about my relationship with my parents as the relationship between Alice and her father plays a major role in the novel. This touching, heartwarming story is one you will want to add to your TBR.

Magical realism time travel with heart and meaning, with a wonderful balance of real emotion and joyful whimsy. I am just the right age for the 90s scenes to feel really nostalgic, but they are also gorgeously written, sharp and funny but with a wistful golden-hour haze to them. Straub clearly takes real pleasure in the time travel concept while also grappling with big thoughts about grief, acceptance, nostalgia (both the pleasure and pain of it), and deciding which life to live.

I enjoyed this novel and finished it in a day. I read it after I saw the author’s tribute to her late father, and it certainly made me reflect on how I’ll feel to lose my own father one day. It was an interesting take on the time traveling genre and felt like a mash-up of About Time and 13 going on 30. Not revolutionary but interesting all the same. I’d read more from this author.
