I've been reading a lot of Adrienne Young this month and cannot decide how I actually feel about her work. This was "okay" but not extraordinary or breathtaking in any way. Was it good, sure! But it wasn't a book that I can say I love, despite a really pretty cover!

Really enjoyed this one, though it was quite a different feel from the first book in the series. I love Tova and Halvard a lot.

The Girl the Sea Gave Back is dual pov and follows Halvard from the first book as a young adult and a young Kyrr girl named Tova.

So far I don’t really care for this story and I contemplated for a while if I was going to DNF this. I looked at reviews and most of them were mixed, I tried to find a spoiler one so I could know what happened. The only reason I didn’t DNF this one was because I wanted to know how it ended.

I do like how Halvard gets his own story and I like the small bits we are told about what happened to the characters from the first book.

The action and fight scenes are more thought out, last longer, and are, in my opinion, better than the first book. But just like the first book The Girl the Sea Gave Back is character driven and not plot so it took a while for anything to really happen.

There are some things that happen in this book that you have to suspend your disbelief on, both because it’s just not possible and because it’s not explained.

If you are looking for a romance or even a slight one this isn’t the book for you. This books main focus is the conflict, the action, and the main characters.

I would recommend the audiobook if you are like me and have a hard time pronouncing things because let me tell you, the way things are spelled in this book isn’t how they’re actually pronounced.

Spoiler-Free Review:

I’m not sure why so long to read this book, but I’m thinking it was meant to be. Being back in this world with this culture was like getting a warm hug. I adore this world and the characters that Adrienne Young created for this series! This book takes place 10 years after the events of Sky in the Deep, and it follows the journey of Halvard (Fiske’s brother) and Tova a woman from another clan. We do get to see some familiar faces from Sky in the Deep. I am a reader who loves closure, and so I love that we got a bit more on where the characters from the previous book ended up. The adventure in this book was just so well written. My heart was pounding for so many chapters. The detail and imagery that Adrienne Young writes with is unreal. I felt so present in the story and I love that. I took off one star because I craved more connection between the two main characters. They finally have a moment and then the book ended. I wanted a little more closure from them. Maybe an epilogue? The reader can assume where the story goes but I wanted to read it. Overall I loved this book and it was comforting to be immersed in their world for the second time this month. This book is pretty firmly YA there is violence and some “gore.”

This is a sequel novel to Sky in the Deep. Our favorite, lovable characters from the first book are back, but this time, set 10 years later. The story focuses on Halvard, now a strapping young man, and new character Tova, a woman from the strange, distant Kiera clan. We get to see some old characters, some new characters, and new battles. Young expands the universe she created for Sky in the Deep with new clans and gods, and gives some more information about past characters and their motivations.
